Just in Time for the Holidays, Clock & Stay Package

Clocks! Every where I look there is a clock. Several years ago Victor took up collecting antique clocks. I have taken up trying to sell them. Obviously, Victor is much more successful at his hobby than I am. So, when you do come to the Hotel Charlotte, I hope you will buy an antique clock.

Victor has scoured EBay, Craigslist and has gone to estate sales too. No clock seems to be too far away. One day he even got in the truck and drove to LA. He drove down, saw the clock and was back 12 hours later. With the clock I might add. Another we purchased while visiting family in St. Louis—it's still there, we can't figure our how to get it home!Almost all of the clocks arrive here needing some degree of attention, which is why he gets a good price and I don't fuss too much. Then they go to our friend, neighbor and clock master for fixing and cleaning. Then I start to fuss! Now that the clocks work, the cost basis goes up quite a bit. But all of them are very beautiful, some hundreds of years old. Most from places very far away.

The addition of these clocks along with our consignment clocks has made such a wonderful impact on the aura of the hotel, providing a whole new set of stories to tell. This clock came from Argentina, but was made in Japan. That one is a one-of-a-kind master piece owned by a little old lady who only used it once a week to see if it was time to go to church... Another is a two weight. And isn't this a nice one? A Seth Thomas. I think I will have to learn a little something more about clocks now.

We have taken our previously bare hallway walls on the second floor where the guest rooms are and have added a collection of historic building photographs by Terri Metz sprinkled with a clock here, and one there—all chimeless of course! The dining room has one grandfather clock and 7 wall clocks and with the new fire place and a handful of mantle clocks we found in New Zealand on this year's recipe research trip in a little town on Charlotte Sound, imagine that! I will take oodles of photos and get them on the internet so you can see how cool some of these are. Consider our Clock and Sleep Special. Buy a Clock or a couple of clocks, spending $600 or more and enjoy a complimentary night in the hotel valid November-March. Make buying an antique clock a getaway adventure. Call for details, some restrictions apply. 209-962-6455

    Upcoming Holidays at the Charlotte

Perhaps a bit early for this distribution, but our newspaper deadlines demanded it was written now. Read once, and I will post again later to refresh. LOL See you around! Lynn
We invite you to enjoy our Holiday traditions this year with the Hotel Charlotte. We start our December with the annual Asian dinner at Monday Night Football 12/5 for the ROOFBBs. Victor will be serving some of his favorites including Chinese cabbage & bok choy salad, Oriental chicken with General TSO's sauce and vegetarian fried rice, just $10 per person and 100% of the income goes to ROOFBB's for community philanthropic projects.
The next week we encourage you to enjoy an evening of dinner-theater, blending a nice pre-show dinner at the Hotel Charlotte before heading out to the Pine Cone Singers Holiday Reflections production at 7:30 on Friday and Saturday evening. Sunday... make it a brunch-theater event with the performance at 2:00 pm.
Just a few days later, on December 15th is Groveland's annual bird count where we have long provided chili for the counter's wrap up gathering. Count for chili! www.HotelCharlotte.com/bird.html or contact Bill Zachman.
Then, my new favorite festival, the Oops! I Need a Gift Faire held at the Hotel Charlotte on Friday, December 23rd from noon to 4 featuring one of a kind products, some crafty, some wacky, some just plain neat! None available in stores locally, all available for last minute shoppers. We will be in our full holiday attire with the funky white Christmas tree and elfin caps. This year in addition to our great participants, we will also offer a Wine Blowout! Get your favorites in time for the Holidays at 1/2 off per bottle and a 7.25% additional discount on a case (we will pick up the tax). Mix and Match. We will be well stocked up for the event!  Pre-orders accepted, just give a holler and we will have your case ready at your convenience. Support your local artisans, craft persons and such.
Next up... three nights, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 23, 24 &  25 of grand holiday celebrations where Victor has selected a handful of seasonal 3-course dinners (soup or salad, entree and dessert) starting with a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings for $19.95, a 16oz porterhouse steak for $29.95, grilled sword fish with a tomato citrus salsa, $26.95 or his signature Lobster Ravioli dinner for $25.95. For those with personal favorites, selections from our regular menu will also be available.
The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner throughout the Holiday week between Christmas and New Years Eve when we will have a grand year end celebration on Saturday, December 31st, serving from 5:30 to 9pm. Again, choose from our regular menu or celebration menu with the addition of a lobster tail choice and more.

    Mayor Goose Photo Shoot

Mayor Goose spent time on Saturday working his first major photo shoot with Kris Corey of Yosemite Audio Adventures (http://www.yosemite-tours.org/)  Kris won this prestegious opportunity at the last Yosemite Chamber of Commerce mixer when Carolyn was the highest bidder for this personal endorsement press release in favor of a Chamber Business. Kris scripted the concept and set the scene and Goose put on his tuxedo and "went camping" in Yosemite with the aide of the audio adventure cd. Goose stirred the beans, set up the pup tent, lead the hike and herded the sheep from atop the stump.

Piano playing, hotel-dog named Mayor of Groveland, 2011-12

    Meet the Mayor of Groveland

Okay, so it is purely an honorary title, but this little dog, named Goose, who is now starting his second non-consecutive term as Mayor, doesn’t know the difference! In his first year out, Goose, unlike most politicians, actually got something done for the town of Groveland having taken on the fundraising activities for the new dog park. This term’s “opus” remains undefined, but somehow a perfect project always seems to fall in our path.

Mayor Goose lives at the Hotel Charlotte in downtown Groveland where he welcomes visitors from around the world with a friendly bark “hello” and performs for them nightly, playing his favorite piano pieces with the aid of a delicious treat bandied about much like a conductor might wave his baton to the orchestra.

Goose’s hotel-home is a somewhat eclectic place with dozens of antique clocks all set at unique times, parasols hung upside down from the ceiling and a philodendron plant that nearly wraps around the dining room. In addition to the bevy of wonderments, this is a hotel filled with kindness and laughter—a place where visitors know they are always #1!

Guests to Goose’s hotel might be enjoying one of the traditional rooms, cozy, but with everything you need for a quick overnight into or out of Yosemite, or perhaps one of the family suites where parents and kids each have separate rooms with the bath between. There are a few larger, more amenity rich rooms to choose from for those who enjoy a touch more than the basics. Traveling with a group? Vacation rental houses are the way to go. Just two miles from the Hotel (inside the Pine Mountain Lake resort) where seven rental condos can host up to 50 people within one block. Perfect for reunions, golf tournaments, retreats or wedding parties.

A favorite of Goose’s and many of our locals and visitors alike is the food. Ah, Victor has really put together a sumptuous menu for both lunch & dinner. Goose wishes he could enjoy “people food” more often and thinks that the signature Chicken Jerusalem could be his favorite, but would also enjoy one of the perfectly prepared steaks. Check the menu online and let us know what your favorite might be.

Along with the entertaining dog, Hotel Charlotte is a center for events in the fall/winter season from our Cabaret Charlotte (October 20 & 23) to wine dinners, murder mystery plays and more. The Hotel Charlotte truly is where folks have fun—whether enjoying one of our programs or teaming with you for a private festive event from ladies get-away pajama parties to toga parties, a speak-easy or Hawaiian luau, or how about a costumed cowboy, country BBQ?

Did I mention how close Groveland is to everything? You already know we are 24 miles from Yosemite National Park, but also just seven miles from some of the best white water river rafting in the world on the Cherry and Tuolumne rivers. From here it is just a few minutes to boat, swim, fish, hike, golf, horseback ride, hunt and even pan for gold! For those who like to blend culture with their holidays, we have our local supported Groveland Museum, are fairly close to several wonderful theaters in Sonora, and if you like to shake it up a bit, there are two casinos 30-40 minutes away.

While “Mayor” Goose thinks Yosemite is the Cat’s Meow, he really does like just hanging out in Groveland, visiting Mountain Sage (the nursery, arts center, amphitheater and visitors center). Sometimes he heads down to Rainbow Pool (our secret swimming hole) to take a quick jump off a rock or slide over the water fall, conditions permitting of course. But best of all are all the happenings around Groveland—from flea markets to tuxedoed balls, festivals and farmers markets. Many of which are pet- friendly venues, though Goose would be hard pressed to admit to being anyones pet!

Goose hopes to welcome you to Groveland and Hotel Charlotte. With our new fall-winter , Oct 30-Mar 29, rates starting at $99, there is no reason not to. Did you know that Yosemite IS most stunning in the winter with the snow-kissed granite walls? YOU own Yosemite on winter visits. With Goose’s Mayoral winter-weather guarantee, you can’t go wrong. Plan ahead or be spontaneous. Hotel Charlotte cancellations fees are waived in the event snow tire chains are required to enter the park on Highway 120 on the day before or of your visit.

We invite you to come, sleep with the Mayor. http://www.hotelcharlotte.com/ 209.962.6455

    It's been a year

It has truly been a year since my last post on this blog. So much has happened. Facebook has become a daily part of our program, posting Hotel Announcements and Specials on www.Facebook.com/CafeCharlotte. We also co-administer the Groveland page, www.Facebook.com/Groveland and Yosemite Page, www.Facebook.com/Yosemite120. That explains why this has slipped on priority list.

We just returned from our latest recipe research trip and are coming out with a new menu on Tuesday, March 1. It's very exciting, our most changes ever! I need to get the menu pdfed and on our website.

Things you can look forward to for March, 1/2 priced wine nights. ANY bottle of red on our list is half priced on Sundays, ANY bottle of white, half priced on Tuesdays. Cabaret Charlotte, Groveland's Annual Gala and a whole lot more are all just around the corner. www.HotelCharlotte.com/events.html
